Senate Confirms LTG Michael Groen as JAIC Director

The U.S. Senate has confirmed LTG Michael Groen to be the new director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC), the Department of Defense’s (DoD) division for developing and advancing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, FedScoop reported on Monday. With Groen’s recent confirmation, he has also been promoted to major general.

JAIC, DIU Partner With Industry to Prototype RPA-Driven Transaction Mgmt Concepts; Jeff Klugman Quoted

The Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) has partnered with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to select commercial partners that can integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning into the Department of Defense’s transaction management procedures. JAIC said Thursday the two DoD entities selected contractors such as Summit2Sea and Vertosoft for the Humanless Unmatched Transactions (HUnT) effort.

Future of Defense Task Force Report Calls for US to Lead AI Race, Ensure Supply Chain Resiliency

A report by a congressional task force has strongly recommended that the United States win the artificial intelligence race to ensure the resiliency of the supply chain within civilian and military sectors and “identify, replace, and retire costly and ineffective legacy platforms.” The bipartisan Future of Defense Task Force consists of House lawmakers presented the report to the House Armed Services Committee.

US, UK Sign Declaration on Joint AI R&D Initiatives

The U.S. has entered into an agreement with the U.K. to launch a joint effort aimed at driving artificial intelligence-focused research and development, technology adoption and public-private partnerships. The declaration was signed by Michael Kratsios, U.S. chief technology officer and a 2020 Wash100 Award winner, and U.K. secretaries of state Alok Sharma and Oliver Dowden.

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service initiated a couple of new efforts to simplify how the U.S. federal government processes and manages financial activities. The Digital End-to-End Efficiency initiative aims to fully automate and digitally transform a business process instead of only automating certain, individual tasks, the bureau said Monday.

AI Commission Seeks Comments on How Gov’t Should Engage With Industry to Back Commercial Innovation

The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence has asked small and medium sized companies for feedback on how the government should work with the private sector to advance commercial AI innovation. A request for comments posted Wednesday on Federal Register says NSCAI will use the responses as it works on a final report slated for release in March 2021.

Michael Kratsios: Agencies Should Conduct Trade-Off Analysis as They Adopt AI

Michael Kratsios, U.S. chief technology officer and a 2020 Wash100 Award winner, said government officials should analyze the trade-offs as they push the adoption of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. Accenture Acquires N3 to Expand AI/ML Capabilities; Manish Sharma, Jeff Laue Quoted

Accenture has entered an agreement to acquire N3, a tech-driven sales and demand-generation firm, which will add approximately 2,200 employees to Accenture globally, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities, Accenture reported on Tuesday. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. With the purchase of N3, Accenture will acquire the company’s model of specialized sales talent across complex areas.
